English camp

LemonGrass arranges English camps with many schools across Surin. English camps consist of two days working at a school and three days actually on the 'camp'. The two days in school will be spent working with teachers and pupils to design and prepare topics and material to be used on the camp. This gives volunteers a good chance to meet teachers and pupils before the camp starts. It also allows them to be involved firsthand in what the pupils will do and learn. While called 'camps', there is actually no camping involved; volunteers, teachers and pupils all go home at the end of the day.

The two days in school will run Monday-Tuesday and the camp itself will run Thursday-Saturday; five days in total. The project runs from 9am to 3pm each day.

Approximately 100 pupils aged 13-15 and their teachers will spend three days away from the classroom at the camp and carry out nothing but English-related studies. The pupils will be split up into small groups of less than 20 to work with the volunteers and teachers. The studies include some traditional teaching, but also include a lot of fun activities like singing, dancing and games. The whole idea is to make the learning as fun as possible. Volunteer's contribution is very important. It brings an element of reality and purpose to the children. They love meeting volunteers and your presence acts as a catalyst to their learning.

This project is ideal for volunteers who maybe want to try out a short, fun teaching project before they commit to a longer project. It is also ideal for the volunteer who wants to fit in some volunteering around a holiday or some travelling and is limited by time.
